  • back to the grind

oh analysis homework! how I have missed reading all the problems and having no clue where to start!

So in my really really hard class ( Stochastic Differential Equations) we have to present on an application for 40% of our total grade. I'm of course taking this very seriously - spent some time at the library before break, figured out how to use interlibrary loan to get another book. Yesterday I emailed the teacher to nail down a) the day of the presentation b) the length of the presentation c) tell him about my tentative topic. He tells me "most people just do a section out of the textbook." Doh. I'm such an over achiever. But since I have the books, I will try to spend some time this weekend flipping through them and decide if anything grabs me enough to take the hard road. Otherwise it's time to email the other finance-y guy and fight over sections. :)

Fall early registration starts next week. I figure I better go ahead and sign up to help encourage them to please please not cancel all the damn stats classes this time. And I think my analysis teacher is going to be willing to do a readings seminar on simulation. should be great!

Also, I've learned to make rugelach and we really really need to come up with a plan for the guest room floor.

  • I love the internet

I think I finally made the mac terminal not hate me so badly. Stupid home and end keys.

And puttering found tarnished jewelry, but google came up with an entertaining if not effective solution.

N is out running errands and will return with donuts! I love donuts.

It is a good day already.

  • strange week

It's WEIRD not doing any school stuff at all. I'll have to ease back into it this weekend.

On the other hand: we've both applied for life insurance now, filed our taxes, made irish soda bread, bought a big comfy chair, watched a bunch of movies, found out maggiano's is too $$ for our cheapass selves, I'm materially closer to actually having a new job, and both have today off.

also, I went rollerblading and didn't die, despite the fact that I still have no idea how to stop.

and I seem to be on a girly kick. I bought lipstick. I think it's been at least 4 years since I bought lipstick. Scarily, technology has advanced.

  • absolutely NOTHING!

    ok, not quite.

Theoretically, it's back to that Survival Analysis talk today. And theoretically, we're heading to the library to start on our projects. And I should catch up on my reading (1 ch extra analysis, 1 ch rudin, 1 ch stochastic)

N is still sick but seems to be slowly improving, so it's going to be a pretty low impact weekend. My goals are to make Irish Soda Bread and to water the grassy bits of lawn while I spray roundup on the weeds in the xeriscaping.

2 whole weekends with no homework. man, I didn't get that over xmas.

  • the ides of march

we had a 40 minute power outage this morning. we spent 25 minutes of it in denial, sleeping in a little extra. called it in to the power company, and the recorded voice promised us power within 4 hours. then 15 packing things up to go to work. then as we went to figure out how the heck you get your car out of the garage when the electricity is out.... it came back on. whew.

that's my surreal start to the day.

  • oh no!

Pi day snuck up on me! I forgot to make pie!  :(

March 11, 2007

  • today

    1. all the snow from the blizzard finally melted (2 1/2 months)

    2. pulled all my fighting gear out of both my car and the garage. packed it up and stuck it in the shed since I don't expect I'll need it in the foreseeable future.

  • spring break is just the other side of midterms

Have I mentioned how truly grateful I am that my take home midterm is not over spring break?

(also, everyone bailed on stats last week - I ended up doing some data analysis with the prof, but didn't have to present. and today, she's out of town - so NEXT week. geez.)

this weekend: read ch 8 of analysis

tuesday: analysis midterm. must figure out some effective way to study before then

thursday: sde take home midterm due

friday: really truly present on survival analysis. since I do have all this extra time, should really figure out what the code is doing and add that to presentation.. (not that I couldn't easily fill all the time with midterm stuff.. )

I'm finding myself with the terrible habit of saying "oh, I'll do that over spring break" without taking into account that I will still be working... so far I've said

    1. Start looking for SDE project
    2. Figure out what I want to do about the floor in the red room
    3. Find a wedding photographer

I think I'll be happy if I get any one of those done...

I was really determined to go dancing this weekend, but N has some kind of sore throat thing (and he's a miserable sick person) and I tweaked my neck monday and it _still_ hurts.... so.... maybe not after all. meh.

  • 2 weeks til spring break!

today: presentation is still not totally ready, but I'm far enough that I can at least bullshit it from here.

weekend: read ch. 7 of extra analysis book. catch up with analysis reading.

tuesday: analysis. mmm... continuity. (I finally understand uniform continuity!)

thursday: stochastic (I much prefer it when he gives us two weeks. because I'm lazy. That's right.)

extra: fiddle with extra random stats dataset.

totally non school: Free First Saturday at the Art Museum. It looks like we'd have to get there early, but I seem to have a "grown-up" sleep schedule now, so that may work out.

  • i love fresh bread

eating warm from the oven rolls with butter... mm.... This is why I bake! (the homemade king cake this weekend was pretty damn good too.. )
