  • Brain .. full .. of stats

I just got back for my local ASA Spring meeting, and now my brain is tired just from trying to understand stuff.

Monday - Have first round of proofreads done for math clinic
Tuesday - Read paper for econ
    Wednesday* -
Thursday* - Read paper for econ, math stat take home test due
    Friday* -

    * - In NY for work. Gah. Must remember to email in take home test before I leave (or at least email it to myself so I can work on it on my work computer. In the approximately 30 minutes of free time I'll have when I won't need to sleep. )

I bought gas for the first time in ~ 6 months ( I think N filled it up once in there.) and while sitting in traffic, figured out from my mileage til next oil change that I've driven about 1000 miles in the last year.

  • cranky lady stays home

I had my semiannual dentist visit today (mostly not so bad) and my math clinic group agreed that they don't want to see me in person when people have spent the morning irritating me. So me and my cranky are staying home with the dogs, and hope to dispel the cranky before N comes home.

Monday: Math clinic paper and presentation - there's gonna be a lotta drafts floating through the email this weekend
    Tuesday: read econ paper
    Wednesday: -
Thursday: read econ paper and math stat hw

Gotta get rolling on math stat and econ projects. the week before finals is starting to look presentation-rific.

I did "lead discussion" on that econ paper yesterday. In that way where out of our class of 4, I was the only one to show up, so I chatted with the teacher for 90 minutes. This kind of thing is why graduate school has to end eventually - being the only one who takes the class seriously gets really old.

  • 10/16

Today: math clinic group. Decide if I want to lead Thursday econ paper discussion. (gotta do one, might as well get it out of the way.. )

    Monday: -
    Tuesday: read paper for econ
Wednesday: math clinic team meetings - have something ready that needs meeting to get through
Thursday: math stat hw, econ paper

No fixed deadline but should do soon: Choose paper for math stat pres. Go over math stat test 1. Maybe catch up with what's going on in discrete math modeling.

There's a lot of synergy going on in my classes right now, which makes me sit around and go "wow". Discrete and math stat are both doing some crazy linear algebra tricks. Yesterday math stat and econ both talked about Monte Carlo methods to quantify bias under certain assumptions.

I had a true math geek zen moment Tuesday. I'm not terribly interested in (at least the parts we're doing now) Environmental Econ, but I actually thought "The math is hard enough to make this interesting."

  • seems ok, but I still feel twitchy

I owe my math clinic group an email before class monday.

Thursday that math stat hw is due, and I probably need to read another econ paper. Emailed teacher as his website still does not acknowledge the existence of our class. grrr.

I feel like there should be more. Maybe Math Clinic has finally indoctrinated me into "there's ALWAYS more you should be doing for Math Clinic!"

bah. And I'm slightly sick in "most food sounds awful, want to sleep a lot" way. :(

  • I just can't seem to get organized...

    without my dated to-do list.

Wednesday: have read previous reports on bike problem for Math Clinic. Have some ideas about the model.

Next Monday: be prepared to lead class discussion about the bike problem.
Next Tuesday: read paper for econ
    Next Wednesday: -
Next Thursday: math stat hw due

See? now I know that it's silly of me to be working on math stat now.

  • spring break

the break really throws me. I mean, it's not a "break" so much - it's a chance to work enough hours to really contribute to household expenses, hurrah! and Wednesday has been eaten nearly entirely by Math Clinic. In the mean time, I'm sitting here at school typing up math stat homework, just like any other Friday.

There are a disturbing number of people in the math department given that it is spring break. I guess that is part of the charm of the math department.

OH! So I don't forget, I'm supposed to find out what's special about pi^2/6 and maybe even why it is the "standard" normalized variance for logistic regressions. And what it has to do with Euler's constant.

  • Happy Pi Day!

Pie approximations! I meant to bring them to school yesterday, but I don't vary my morning routine well.

But as it turns out, there are more people that I want to give pie to coming today than I thought, so it's perfect.

I used a canned cherry pie filling. and I just can't feel that bad about it.

    So!

Monday: Econ paper that was due today? Due 5pm Monday.
Tuesday: Math Stat Hw that was due yesterday? Due Tuesday.
    Wednesday: -
Thursday: ASA lunch meeting, Read 1st paper for next section of econ *emails instructor to ask what it is*
Instructor's email is not listed anywhere. Ooookay. I guess part of today's procrastination is to wander over to Econ and annoy people. (which is generally fun, I adore Econ people. But I don't think they'd understand Pi day.)

  • Tech moron moments

    I hate JavaScript.

If you want the value of an item on the page, Firefox will happily use .value OR .text

    IE will only use .text

The moron part: I figured this out 3 weeks ago. But I didn't search and fix ALL the places I was using it. That's right - because I'm a moron. Damn.
